NEUROMODULATION TECHNIQUE (NMT)
AUTISM PATIENTS

CASE REPORTS

Dr. Fred Bloem of Olney, Maryland, is currently recruiting children ages 5 to 10 with a diagnosis of autism to participate in an international study to determine if NeuroModulation Technique (NMT) is effective in reducing maladaptive behaviors and increasing adaptive behaviors in children diagnosed with autism.

From the NMT Practitioner Message Board, here are selected case reports of children with autism who had a successful response to NeuroModulation Technique.

The statements provided below are for informational purposes only and represent the experiences of the individuals making them. Everyone's experience with any therapeutic modality will vary from person to person, and no guarantees can be made regarding any particular outcome or effect.

Abbreviations used in these case reports:

  • IF: Information fault
  • MRT: Muscle Response Testing

The 2- to 6-letter abbreviations refer to specific NMT Clinical Pathways. For example:

  • AP: Allergy Pathway
  • IAP: Infectious Agent Pathway

Boy with Autism - Fred Bloem, M.D. & Alice W. Lee-Bloem, M.D.

C.F. was four years old when he presented in July 2003 with a diagnosis of autism. He was normal at birth and continued to develop normally until he received childhood immunizations just before his second birthday. That is when the patient’s verbal skills regressed dramatically and his behavior became increasingly hyperactive and socially unacceptable. Prior to coming to see my wife (Dr. Alice W. Lee-Bloem, a holistic child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist) and I, the patient had seen many other healthcare professionals, including a speech pathologist, a childhood development specialist, a child psychiatrist, a child psychologist, and an alternative medicine specialist.

We treated the patient with a combination of nutritional supplements and energy medicine, including NeuroModulation Technique and Emotional Freedom Technique.

Initially, the little boy did not understand when people spoke to him. He would simply echo and repeat words that other people used. He would exhibit socially unacceptable behavior (e.g., sticking his fingers in his nose and randomly poking his mother in the eye). Over the course of just one year, the patient’s verbal skills gradually improved. Both his abilities to understand and to express himself improved.

Another concern was that this boy was unable to control his bladder and bowels. This problem also responded well to energetic medicine treatment and he became fully toilet trained.

After one year the patient discontinued NMT treatment.

Several years after stopping NMT his reading skills were two years above grade level and his math skills were one year above grade level.

Spring 2008 Update - Five years later

C.F. is now 9 years old and was recently honored at a statewide awards ceremony for gifted children held by The Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CTY). C.F. was invited to this awards ceremony sponsored by CTY (www.cty.jhu.edu) based on an exceptional performance on a rigorous, above grade level test given to second through eight grade Talent Search participants. Seventh and eighth graders took the SAT or ACT-the same tests used for college admissions. Second through sixth graders took the SCAT, an above-level test scaled for younger students.

The results of these tests give families a better idea of a child's academic talents, particularly in comparison to the thousands of other academically talented students in the Talent Search. Students can also earn recognition at CTY's awards ceremonies, and their test scores may qualify them for CTY's summer programs and distance education courses.

In 2006-07 alone, over 73,000 students from 19 states and the District of Columbia participated in the Talent Searches offered through CTY. About 30% of the 2nd and 6th graders who tested this winter earned an invitation to CTY's Awards Ceremony, and about 25% of the 7th and 8th grade testers earned an invitation to an Awards Ceremony.

C.F., who attends XX Elementary School, joined other award recipients at the recent state ceremony, and was individually honored by Johns Hopkins for his academic performance and promise.

Boy with Autism - Carla Roodenrijs, L.Ac.

I asked my client to tell the story of her son on this web board. She asked me to translate because her English is a bit poor.

This is what she said:

"My son Niels (4) was diagnosed with autism when he was 3 years old. Soon after birth he got eczema, which tremendously worsened after his first vaccination.

He was allergic to milk (cow), and when he gets older also for wheat, soy, peanut, sugar, stone fruit and much more. Like many autistic children Niels had much problems with his bowel movements.

So I wanted to do the NMT treatments for his allergies, which disappeared very quickly, and also his bowel movements normalized.

Carla told me she could try to influence the autism positively with NMT and soon I noticed little changes in his behavior, things so typical for autism.

He makes contact now, is playing with his little brother, try to make little jokes, talks, is hugging, and most of all he doesn't have a relapse when there is a big change! A few weeks ago he changed school. He is in a special school now, and I was worried because of the big change..nothing! He loves to go to school! I am sure that NMT is the big key in here.

Well I heard there is a Autism study in the USA, I would say take your chance!! It is worth it!"

Hi Les and all,

I have been working with a boy who is autistic for a couple of years now. At first I saw him about once per week and then maybe every other week. And now it is occasional as they are doing so many therapies. We started when he was bout 3 1/2. He was attending special classes within the school district and was not in a high functioning classroom. Within a short period of time his mother noticed that he was calmer and got less stressed with changes. He started interacting with other kids at school. And at the next school year he happily trotted off to a new class with a new teacher. Something his mother said would have never happened before NMT. We addressed his allergies and supported NMT with enzymes, etc. She had been having trouble getting him potty trained and after addressing it in several sessions, voila.... he was potty trained! When the brain balancing pathway came out, it came up as priority and after a few sessions, he started to talk. At first a few words and then forming short sentences. He had never spoken a word before. Just attempts and unintelligible sounds. His parents were thrilled! Over time he also became more focused and less sensitive to sound. He is not like a "normal" child yet, but his parents are hopeful for a better life for him than they were before NMT. He is 5 yrs old now and in a higher functioning classroom. He is up to date with their expectation of reading, writing and speaking his letters, numbers, rhymes, etc. His parents are still working with him with many therapies and they are now hopeful for his future.
